Astros edge Red Sox but Springer injured

(AP Photo/David J. Phillip)

HOUSTON (AP) Thrust into an everyday role because of injuries, Jake Marisnick is making the most of his opportunity with the Houston Astros.

Marisnick homered early off Chris Sale, then made two dazzling defensive plays in center field to help the Astros beat the mistake-prone Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Friday night.

"There's not much not to like (about him) in a game like that," manager AJ Hinch said. "When you're a bench player ... you just want an opportunity. You just want a chance to show it. And he's doing great things on the field. It's pretty impressive."

Twins hit 3 more HRs for 9th win in 10

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Though they're not yet one-third of the way through the season, the Minnesota Twins have been putting on quite the show.

These first 50 games were packed with big hits and broken records.

A's put Davis on IL, win 7th straight

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) With six home runs in his last nine games, Mark Canha is trying to do his best impression of Oakland teammate Khris Davis. That's going to be critical in the coming weeks while Davis continues to recover from a sore left hip.

Canha went deep for the third consecutive game as part of back-to-back home runs with Matt Olson in the fourth inning, and the Athletics beat the slumping Seattle Mariners 6-2 on Friday night for their seventh straight win.

Phils overcome Yelich's MLB-best 20th HR

MILWAUKEE (AP) The Philadelphia Phillies needed a big performance from their bullpen after Jerad Eickhoff struggled.

Vince Velasquez and company delivered.

Yankees' Paxton still nursing sore knee

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) New York Yankees pitcher James Paxton still has discomfort in his ailing left knee, and shortstop Didi Gregorius planned to start a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment that Saturday that has him returning to the big league team by mid-June.

Paxton allowed one hit in four innings and struck out seven against Detroit in extended spring training Friday. He has not pitched for the Yankees since May 3.

Rangers' Smyly gets 1st win since 2016

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Drew Smyly has had a long road back from Tommy John elbow surgery, and the Texas left-hander put together a quality start on Friday night that helped earn him his first win in three years.

Smyly went a season-best six innings and kept the Los Angeles Angels offense in check long enough for the Rangers to rally for a 4-3 victory.

Rockies' Story hits 2nd HR for walk-off

DENVER (AP) Trevor Story did a little fist pump after his seventh-inning shot. Just a way to commemorate becoming the fastest shortstop to reach 100 homers.

His 101st in the ninth? Now that was celebrated with a lot more gusto.

Freese's slam powers Dodgers by Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) David Freese stepped into the batter's box, heard the polite applause from the crowd at a ballpark he once called home and was surprised when the familiar strains of Tool's "Stinkfist" blasted through the speakers at PNC Park.

The Pittsburgh Pirates played the song as a token of respect for the veteran infielder, who spent two-plus seasons in black-and-gold before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers last summer. Freese took in the moment and relaxed. But only briefly. The cheers that greeted him Friday night were quickly replaced by a groan after he turned on a Michael Feliz fastball for a first-inning grand slam that powered the Dodgers to a lopsided 10-2 win.

Swanson's 2 HRs lift Braves over Cards

ST. LOUIS (AP) A little lineup tweak is working out quite well for Dansby Swanson and the Atlanta Braves.

Swanson homered twice and Freddie Freeman also connected, helping Mike Foltynewicz and Atlanta beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Friday night.
